From the highlands of the north to the traditional communities of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia is a country of extraordinary cultural and geographic diversity.
As Africa’s only country to retain its sovereignty through the colonial era, Ethiopia has developed a cultural identity unlike anywhere else on the continent—shaped by ancient customs, diverse peoples, distinctive religious practices, and centuries of relative independence from European colonial rule.
This body of work focuses on the people, cultures, and landscapes encountered along the way: ancient religious traditions, rural life, and inhospitable volcanic landscapes, alongside the distinctive communities of Ethiopia’s southwest.
Rather than attempting to document Ethiopia in its entirety, these photographs are a collection of encounters—faces, rituals, work, landscapes, and fleeting moments of everyday life.
