John Knox Seagle was born in West Germany and grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia.
A lifelong interest in the arts first prompted him to dedicate himself to painting and drawing while in public school in Virginia. He studied in Virginia Commonwealth University’s filmmaking program in Richmond before finishing his education with a Bachelor of Photography and Filmmaking from Emerson College in Boston. After a few years working in the film industry in Los Angeles and Vancouver, a long-dormant wanderlust which had been instilled in him by his parents during his childhood in Europe was awakened, and he decided to see the world, an endeavor that his 8-year residence in Qatar has continued to make possible.
He has now lived abroad for the past 20 years in Ethiopia, Canada, France, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, where he works as an English teacher. He has maintained his 25-year passion for photography and is an independent photographer with a keen interest in travel/cultural/documentary photography, with a particular focus on less well-traveled destinations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. He values the portraits he takes while traveling, as he believes these photos capture a unique moment of interaction between strangers which will never be replicated.
When not in Qatar he might be found walking across Spain, dancing salsa in Medellin, listening to jazz in Addis Ababa, drinking Saperavi in Tbilisi, or defiantly pushing the buttons of the United States government by visiting places which the State Department warns against all travel to.
